Advice has been received in Gisborne that the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, the Dominion Chief Scout, has approved of the award of the Silver Cross -of the Boy Scout Association to Scout John Penny, of the Ist Marist Troop, Gisborne, in recognition of his gallant action in rescuing Peter Bartlett from drowning in Gisborne on April 12, 1942. John Penny dived into the harbour fully clothed after another boy who had been playing on the wharf and fallen in. Penny is only 11 years of age, and has been a member of the Ist Marist Troop since its inception eight months ago. He passed his tenderfoot early in December. He is a particu-. larly strong swimmer for his age.
