JAPAN’S STRATEGY

BUILD DEFENCES FEINT RAIDS LIKELY U.S., INDIA & AUSTRALIA (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (10 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 14. Japan’s strategy from now on will aim at building up strong defences in her interior, and she will not risk her navy in fresh unnecessary adventures. This opinion is held by the New York Times’ Far Eastern correspondent, Mr. Hugh Byas, who is now in New York, “There will be feints and assault raids on Australia, India, and the Pacific coast of the United States, but these will be intended to disperse our forces and maintain morale at home,” he added. “There may be efforts to establish bridgeheads and airfields in Australian and Alaskan territory. Siberia will be far easier .to deal with than Australia and India, but probably Japan will concentrate on defence.” Mr. Byas makes an exception of China, stating that there can be no security for Japan uhless the Chinese people are subjugated.
