BRITISH ACHIEVEMENT

NEW SUB-MACHINE GUN STEN IN PRODUCTION (9 a.m.) LONDON, July 14. No gun has ever been designed, tested, or ordered so quickly as the all-British Sten gun. When the- British army lost its equipment at Dunkirk the Americans had the Thomson sub-machine gun and the Germans had the Schmeisser type. Two British designers got down .to the drawing boards in December, 1940, completed the design, and made a prototype gun in one month, and by the end of January the gun had passed the War Office test and the first order for 100,000 had been placed. The gun is now being produced in tens of thousands each week.
