The cost of British social services in the current year was stated by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Kingsley Wood, to. be £ 231,700,000. Of this the .total old age, contributory and supplementary pensions account. for .'£; 104,600,000;, education for £668,000,00.6, unemployment insurance, and assistance for £.31,500,000, housing subsidies for £18,500,000, and national health insurance, for. £9,100,000, Not Included ip Jhe total are to the dependents of men in the fighting services, war pensions, and special war-time measures such as food subsidies and evacuation; ' -■■
