HIGH ORANGE PRICES
GOOD QUALITY FRUIT GISBORNE OPPORTUNITY Gisborne citrus growers have an opportunity of filling a big demand in an unsatisfied market for oranges, but new plantings of orange groves have not proceeded as well as might have been expected in the face of high prioes for the fruit, following a very big reduction in the number of im? ported oranges. Mr. J. D. Kennedy, orchard inr structor in Gisborne, said to-day that Very good results could be expected in a few years from recent plantings. Gisborne-grown sweet oranges were in very good condition, and realised very high prices, their quality among the best varieties being recognised as equal to that of the imported fruit. One of the reasons for the small plantings of orange trees this year was a difficulty in securing suitable trees, and Mr. Kennedy’s advice to those who desired to secure trees was to make the necessary arrangements with their nurserymen without delay. The orange crops were looking exceptionally well at present, and were colouring up early as a result of the dry summer, and were of reasonably good size. He expected the season to be fairly short.
