MANY LIVES LOST
SUNKEN ALLIED SHIPS AXIS U-BOAT VICTIMS ATLANTIC BATTLE (10.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON July 1. Axis submarines are taking a heavy toll of seamen as well as ships in the warfare against Atlantic supply lines. This was revealed when the Navy Department announced the sinking of three more vessels, with the loss of 67 li\ -s. These were a medium-sized United States merchant ship, with 32 dead, a United States merchantman with 11 dead, and a mediumsized Canadian vessel with 24 dead. The two Tatter ships were sunk In the Caribbean. In the two previous days the Navy Department announced sinkings with the loss of 93 lives. A Lisbon report says that Axis submarines and aircraft are reported to have attacked a British convoy escorted by warships for 40 minutes on Tuesday off the southern Portuguese coast. The result of the action is not known.
