SEVERE ’QUAKES
MORE IN MASTERTON BUILDINGS DEMOLISHED 5000 CHIMNEYS AFFECTED (P.A.) MASTERTON, this. day. More or less severe shocks were felt in Masterton yesterday afternoon and last night, .there being a bad jolt about 7 p.m. The work of blowing up St. Matthew’s Church was carried out last night, one charge of gelignite being set off at G. 5 o’clock, blowing out portions of the front and east end. Another charge shortly after 8 o'clock brought the whole of the eastern wall down, the explosion smashing the windows of some houses in .the vicinity. The explosions caused considerable noise but no alarm, though the houses in the vicinity shook. The work of re-erecting chimneys in the residential area has commenced. It is estimated that in the Masterton district 5000 chimneys are damaged or down. Some houses have five chimneys down and practically every house has at least one damaged. In one street over 300 chimneys were damaged. In other parts of Wairarapa there must be several thousand chimneys damaged.
