CRISIS OVER COAL

MINISTER’S FORECAST OPPOSITION ATTACK (10 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 20. A political crisis over the Government’s handling of the coal-mining troubles was forecast by the Minister of Labour, Mr. E. J. Ward, when addressing mining officials of the northern coalfields. Mr. Ward said that an attack- is being planned by the Opposition and it will be launched when Parliament reassembled in a week or two. Mr. Ward charged the coal-owners with responsibility for many stoppages and said interests were at work for the overthrow of the. Government and that a section of the coal-owners had a part in the scheme. Mr. Ward appealed to the miners to exert every influence to thwart the “scheming of owning interests.” He said he would order a Federal inquiry into the management of the coal mines, which would ascertain whether the collieries had been operated efficiently and whether coal production had been maintained at the maximum.
