WOMEN IN THE WAR

GISBORNE RECRUITING DEFINITE WORK AHEAD CAMOUFLAGE NETS Substantial success has attended the special recruiting, effort organised by the Poverty Bay executive of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary, which recently opened a depot for registration of women willing to undertaken different forms of war work. To date, it has been difficult to organise efforts owing to lack of material and opportunities for service. The participation of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary in last week-end’s defence-work drive round Gisborne offered an opportunity to a large number of young women, but was not sufficient to satisfy those who, having registered for service, were anxious to engage in a definite programme of work.

It is expected, however, that at an early date a call will be made for such types of service as the manufacture of camouflage nets. This work has been taken up by the Girl Guides’ Association, and already a number of girls have become reasonably expert, but the volume of production must be enlarged speedily, and thus an opportunity occurs for the early employment of women registered under the W.W.S.A. The availability of materials will determine the date on which the work will begin, and preliminary instructions in netting •will be furnished to those interested.

A point of general interest to those registering under the Women’s War Service Auxiliary is the protection extended to them while engaged in official tasks. Insurance has been arranged by the Government, and will come into operation as soon as the necessary documents have been signed and forwarded to the department concerned. The necessary forms are now available at the W.W.S.A. recruiting depot in Gisborne, where registrants should take an early opportunity of calling.
