PIONEER SURVEYOR
DEATH AT 90 YEARS MR. JOSEPH E.' DALTON The death of Mr. Joseph Edwin Dalton occurred at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. G. A. Moore, Te Araroa, on Christmas Day, and his passing removes a well-known pioneer surveyor, whose work took him to many parts of New Zealand. Mr. Dalton was particularly well known on the East Coast, for in his later years he did much useful work as a Maori interpreter, and his associations with the Maoris on the East Coast were extensive. He was described as a great bushman of the hard type who would go anywhere and never fail to tackle anything within the scope of his duties. Over Gft. in height, he was a fine figure of a man in his prime. Born in England 90 years ago, Mr. Dalton came to New Zealand as a lad of 15 years, and in his work as a pioneer surveyor he came to know this country from end to end as did few other men. Mr. Dalton is mourned by a family of four daughters, Mrs. J. Edwards, Wellington, Mrs. J. Drummond, Kaitaia, Mrs. C. A. Arthur, Te Aroha, and Mrs. G. A. Moore, Te Araroa. fThe interment took place in Te Araroa yesterday.
