INTOXICATED DRIVER
£ls FINE IMPOSED A fine of £ls was imposed on Orange Morrell, aged 38, a Maori labourer, of Whanggra, when he appeared before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Gisborne Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday afternoon on a charge of having been found in a state of intoxication in charge of a motor car that day. He pleaded guilty to the charge, and on a charge of having been without a current warrant of fitness he pleaded not guilty, but was fined 10s. Senior-Sergeant H. H. Russell said that the accused was seen by Mr. R. Metcalf, transport inspector, coming from the Makaraka Hotel. At the police station the accused was submitted to a medical examination and was certified as being unfit to be in charge of a motor vehicle, The accused stated that he did not attempt to drive the car, and was not in charge of it at the time. The accused also was ordered to pay medical expenses, £1 Is, while his driving license was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another for 12 months.
On Wednesday afternoon a second motorist was arrested and will be charged on Monday with having been in charge of a motor car while in a state of intoxication.
