GERMANS IN AFRICA COMPLAINT BY GENERAL (Reed. Dec. 26, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 25. . The British tactics in Libya are to cut the Gulf of Sirte coastline into small strips and sandwich the enemy between strong units of the Imperial forces, says the Daily Mail’s correspondent with the Eighth Army. This will mean that General Rommel will be obliged to fight even to maintain the retreat to Tripoli. A Cairo message states that the spirit of the Germans in North Africa is deteriorating. The efficiency of the German officers is below expectations.
A circular letter signed by General Von Brauchitsch and addressed to all commanders was found in an evacuated camp. It stated that the present-day standard of recruits was most disturbing. Only 1 per cent, was able to pass the examinations and the entire moral standard of the young men was bad. “I notice that many lack keenness,” he added. "This state of affairs is partly due to the economic nature of this war.” j
