Imperial headquarters in Tokio announced to-night that a naval battle is in progress in the western Pacific between Japanese and British units. The announcement, also states that Japanese aeroplanes bombed the Hawaiian Islands, and that 144 people, were killed and 800 wounded at Oahu. A Japanese aircraft carrier had been sunk off Honolulu. Wake Island, in the Pacific, had been occupied by the Japanese forces. . . TT , , A series of raids by Japanese aircraft on Honolulu resulted in 550 people being killed on an airfield. Several fires were started in the city area. Mr. Stephen Early, the President’s secretary, stated that Japanese submarines were out in strength in that part of the Pacific.
