Gloom has been cast over the district by the news of the supreme sacrifice of the first volunteer from the hill country, Private T. I. Twisleton, .and the sympathy of the whole community is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Twisleton and family in their bereavement.
Ah old Maori resident of Matawai, Mrs. Kapa, a relative of Mrs. T. Halbert, Makaraka, died at the week-end. Mrs. Kapa was much respected by the community and had many friends both Maori and European.
