MATAWAI MEETING

LABOUR CANDIDATE BAY OF PLENTY SEAT A fair attendance of electors was recorded at a meeting in Matawai on Saturday evening, when the Labour candidate for the Bay ot Plenty seat, Mr. Chas. Mills, addressed the gathering The candidate had the assistance of the Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Agriculture and Marketing. Mr. W. R. Clark was in the chair. The chairman paid a tribute to the late Lieutenant A. G. Hultquist, M.P.. whose death on service abroad had led to the by-election. Mr. Clark referred to the esteem and respect in which the late member had been held by all sections of the community, and the deep sympathy felt for Mrs. Hultquist and her daughter.

Mr. Mills gave an able outline of Labour’s policy in regard to the internal development of New Zealand, and also spoke of the war effort led by the Labour Government. Mr. Barclay's speech dealt mainly with the marketing of primary products, but he also touched on the war effort arid upon the general objectives of the Labour Party.
