SMOKE CONCERT

HOME GUARD COMPANY .A highly-successful smoke concert was held 'on Saturday evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Derby street, by members of D Company of the Gisborne battalion, Home Guard. There was a large attendance of members of the company, who were addressed by the Group Director, Colonel R. F. Gambrill. During the evening the opportunity was taken to present Mr. D. E. Goldsmith, who has acted as Q.M.S. to the company, with a leather wallet. Mr. Goldsmith is leaving shortly for New Plymouth. . Several-toasts were honoured during the evening, as follows: "The King” and "Home Guard Battalion." proposed by Mr. A. T. Webber, and the latter responded to by Major H. Miller; "D Company,” proposed by Mr R. Mitchell and replied to by Mr. L. Kendrew; "The Army. Navy and Air Force,” proposed by Mr. D. E. . Chrisp, and replied to-by Captain G. W. King; “Nursing Service and the Ladies,” proposed by Mr. W. M. Clarkson, and responded to. by Mr. G. Duncan; “The Mercantile Marine.” proposed by Mr. W. R. Torrie and replied to by Mr. D. A. Dale; “Our Allies,” proposed by Mr. D. W. Comber- and replied to by Mr. V. J. Butler; and “The Artists,” ■proposed by Mr. C. Hillyard and replied to by Mr. Stove. Items were given by the following: Songs, Mr. D. E. Goldsmith; harmonica solos, Mr. R. Wallace; humorous items. Mr. McDermott; musical saw solos, Mr. G. Poole; community singing, led by Mr. W. Wilkie. The pianist was Mr. Stove, a member of the Waerenga-o-kuri Home Guard.
