STILL IN FORCE

RESTRICTION ON HOSES EFFECTIVE CONTROL “The control of hoses according to the scheduled times appears to be working very well.” stated the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council, “but the restrictions are not lifted, for there has not been sufficient rain to ease the position a great deal." Mr. Bull stated that over the weekend only ,29in. of rain had fallen at Waingake'. It was apparent that a great number of the citizens were complying with the council’s stipulations that the hoses were to be used only at the hours set out, and the higher levels were in/ a much better position than before the restricted hours. “I think, however,” he continued, "that there is still a lot of full-time hosing going on. It is a completely anti-social act, and those people certainly will be prosecuted, if we can get at them.” Mr. F. Tolerton said that those people who used their hoses indiscriminately did not deserve to be called citizens. The borough engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas, reported that during the fortnight ended November 28 only ,33in. of rain had fallen at Waingake. During the first week in November the meter readings showed that 8,260,000 gallons had been drawn off, 9,650,000 gallons during the next week, and 9,130,000 during the third week. During the past fortnight two leaks had occurred on the main pipeline, one near Parker’s wool shed and the other at Bushmere road. The Mangapoike pumping plant was now in readiness for use, and if rain did not fall soon the supplementing of the Waingake supply from the Mangapoike' Stream would have to be undertaken. The.preparation of drawings and other information required by the Local Governments Loans Board for the augmentation proposals was progressing satisfactorily.
