DEFENCE CHECK-UP
AUSTRALIAN COAST EQUIPMENT OF TROOPS (Reed. Dec. 3, 11 a.m.) CANBERRA, Dec. 3. The Australian Minister of the Army, Mr. F. M. Forde, in a statement, said there will be an immediate stocktaking in Australia to see that nothing has been left undone to strengthen the Commonwealth defences and afford the best equipment, arms and ammunition for the soldiers, both here and overseas.
Australian people wanted to live in peace and harmony with other nations, but were prepared to fight to the last man to protect their heritage and independence. The Commonwealth Government does not intend to recall Sir Bertram Stevens from the position of Australian representative on the Eastern Group Supply Council. The Cabinet is of the opinion that it would be undesirable, in view of the tension in the Far East, to make a change in this important post, which controls the vital flow of war materials.
