FORCEFUL SPEECH
BY-ELECTION CONTEST MINISTERS CRITICISED (Special to the Herald.) WHAKATANE, this day. The largest campaign meeting sb far held in the Bay of Plenty by-election campaign was addressed by the National candidate, Mr. W. Sullivan, in Whakatane last night, when he received an enthusiastic reception from an audience estimated at 450. Mr. B. F. Barry, Mayor of Whakatane, presided. Mr. Sullivan delivered a forceful speech, in the course of which he challenged the action of so many Ministers of the Crown in relinquishing their Ministerial duties in Wellington to take part in the by-election campaign. A vote of thanks, proposed by Mr. C. Loan, and seconded by Mrs. Biggens, was carried by acclamation. Mr. Sullivan, who spoke in Opotiki on Monday night, returns to the Gisborne side of the electorate to-morrow, when he will speak in the evening in Matawai.
