POULTRY AT THE SHOW
THE JUDGE’S COMMENTS
Commenting on the poultry at the Poverty Bay A. and P. Show, the judge, Mr. W. R. Frethy, Hastings, writes that the quality of the birds was very good, but as it was well into the breeding season the birds could not do themselves justice. The large game classes were not very strong, as was the case with all breeds, but some good birds were brought out. The winning black red cock was a good, strong, vigorous bird,., well brought out, and lie won the special prize tor the best bird in the Show. He was closely followed by a Brown Leghorn hen, with the utility Black Orpington cock winner very close
The bantams were only fair, but the best bantam in the Show was again a black red Old English Game, owned by the same exhibitor ns the best bird in the Show. Mr. Frethy was very pleased with the fancy Orpingtons, although the second prize black was not in the pink of condition, the winning bird gaining the verdict on colour and condition, the colour being perfect. In the fancy Rhode Island Reds, the utility cock was not in the best condition, but was a wonderful breed type, and the winning female was perhaps the best laying bird in the Show. The first and second utility Orpington cocks were excellent specimens, the winner having much more body and breadth. The utility Leghorns, both brown and white, would hold their own in any competition.
