GAMBLING IN SCHOOLS
RAFFLES DISLIKED A motion that all school committees and head teachers be informed that the Otago Education Board strongly deprecates the holding of raffles as a means of assisting school funds was carried by the board. The subject was introduced by a request from the Dunedin Council of Christian Congregations that the board should circularise school committees on this question. Mr. W. :M. Cooper gave his opinion that committees should be allowed to use their own discretion where the raising of money was concerned, but he agreed ' with the attitude that nothing should be done which might Ibe construed as encouragement to or approval of gambling in schools. That had always been the policy of the board, he said, and it was a proper one.
