BOYS’ LONG HOURS
Following investigations made in Taranaki into the reason why boys at school became very fatigued during the afternoon, it was reported at a meeting of the Taranaki Education Board that in one case a boy worked 421, hours each week, plus a further 30 hours at school. Of 4(i boys on the roll in Forms 1 and 2 at one school, 25 were in regular work for wages, earning an aggregate of £l4 8s a week, as well as free milk and cream valued at £2 19s, One boy rose at 3.45 a.m., three before 4 a.m., three between 4 and 5 a.m., four between 5 and (i a.m. and 10 before (i a.m.. all winter times.
