POTATO SHORTAGE

SMALL GISBORNE CROP vSEVERE FROST EFFECTS Gisborne, in common with several other parts of the Dominion, is suffering a shortage of potatoes, and this is likely to last until the southern supplies begin to come on to the market. Old season’s tubers are unavailable at present, and only the new season’s are on the market. Growers have been offered prices of to 33d per lb„ equalling £35 a ton. Local supplies are very short at present. The disastrous frost which occurred last month destroyed some of the crops completely, while others were delayed, and in addition to this some of the areas planted were smaller than previously. Even supplies from the north are smaller than usual, and at’present retailers can see no easing of the position for a time.
