STRIKE SETTLED
NEWCASTLE MINERS STAY-IN MEN QUIT PITS (Reed. Nov. 27, 9 a.m.) NEWCASTLE, Nov. 27. The coal miners’ stay-in strike at Wallarah colliery ended on Tuesday. The strikers left the mine after 100 hours underground. The Australian Coal Miners’ Federation executive issued a statement to the effect that the dispute had been satisfactorily settled. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. Curtin, telegraphed to the miners’ president, Mr. C. H. _ Nelson, appealing for greater co-operation in the war effort. He added: “My information ;s that during the past fortnight approximately 90,000 tons, of coal would have been produced but for stoppages which were avoidable and, in my view, should not have happened.” Mr. Curtain assured Mb. Nelson of the Government’s desire to deal justly with the workers and requested Mr. Nelson to exert fully hfs influence to ensure no stoppage in production anywhere.
