PATRIOTIC EFFORTS £224 RAISED IN YEAR (Herald Correspondent.) At the combined meeting of the Muriwai Patriotic Committee and the Muriwai Ladies' Committee, held last evening in the residence of Mr. R. K. Murphy, a survey was made of the past year’s activities. The principal subjects for discussion by the meeting, which was presided over by the chairman of the patriotic committee, Mr. J. F. Mills, were the means by which various moneys had been raised and possible future methods. Mr. C. J. Cox, secretary, presented a financial statement, which showed that £224 18s lid had been raised during the financial year. A report on the activities of the ladies’ committee was presented by Miss M. M. Hughes, secretary. A large number of soldiers’ parcels and large cakes were the work of the ladies, who also were responsible for the making of a large number of various articles, both sewn and knitted, for the comfort of members of the armed forces and of refugees.

Patriotic Cards

Prior to the commencement of play at the monthly card eveniqg held last evening at the residence of Mr. R. K. Murphy. Muriwai, Mr. J. F. Mills paid a tribute to the work of the women of the Muriwai riding for their magnificent efforts in accomplishing so much for patriotic purposes, It was due to their efforts that the majority of the patriotic contributions had been raised. Many whose names were unknown were hard workers and all made sacrifices to assist these praiseworthy efforts. During the 12 months, the secretary, Mr. C. J. Cox, reported, the card evenings had produced £2l for the patriotic funds, while the total from all sources was over £224.

Competition in the play of the evening was keen. The best cards were handed in by Miss .M. Murphy and Miss J. Williams, while the evening’s competition was won by Master P. Cox. This evening, which commences the second year’s activities, as usual yielded a further contribution* to the patriotic funejs, besides providing enjoyment for a large number of people.
