DESERT CEREMONY
V.C. WINNER DECORATED SECOND-LIEUT.' UPHAM (Reed. Nov. 26, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 25. The Commander-in-Chief in the Middle East, General Sir Claude Auchinleck, on a parade ground improvised on a sand plateau overlooking the Mediterranean, recently decorated the Victoria Cross winner, Second-Lieutenant C. H. Upham. A protective screen of fighters wheeled overhead during the ceremony after which the New Zealand brigade marched past. The ceremony was the culmination of General Auchinleck’s lightning tour of the forward area in which he inspected New Zealanders, South Africans, Indians and also British armoured formations.
