DOCTOR’S SON

RESCUED BY DOCTOR (Herald Correspondent.) By plunging into the Wairoa River on Monday morning Dr. E. B. Jardine saved the son of a medical colleague, Dr. L. A. Riddell, medical superintendent of the Wairoa Hospital, from serious difficulties. Dr. Riddell’s two boys, Julian and Peter, had gone bathing near the bridge. Peter got out of his depth and was swept out by a strong current. His brother, Julian, with considerable presence of mind, rushed to Dr. Jardine’s house nearby. Dr. Jardine stripped and plunged into the water. The boy was rapidly nearing exhaustion and every now and then his head sank below the surface of the water. Seeing help arriving the boy ceased to struggle and wisely continued to tread water and wait. Eventually Dr. Jardine reached the boy and brought him to the shore, where he was treated and soon recovered.
