'Quake in Wellington A sharp shock of earthquake was felt in Wellington at 10.6 p.m. last Friday, lasting for several seconds. Extensive Onion Paddock A farmer in the Makerua district has an onion paddock 62 acres in extent. Last year, the farmer spent £350 on drainage. Headlight Restrictions For failing to comply with the regulations for cars driving in the headlight restricted areas, George J. Easton, Rere, was fined £1 and costs £1 3s when his case came before Mr. E, L. Walton, S.M., in the Gisborne Magistrate’s Court to-day. Evidence was given by Constable L. Allan, Patutahi, and Senior-Sergeant H. H. Russell stated that the defendant was coming into town to visit his wife in hospital. Central Otago Needs Rain While Dunedin in the past few months has been experiencing a surfeit of rain and wintry weather generally, the greater part of Central Otago is looking as thougli January and Febuary had arrived instead of the middle of November. Reports are that although there has been a good and valuable fall of rain around Wanaka and Hawea, the lower stretches of Central Otago has been waiting nearly five months for a worth-while shower.

Assault Charge A further remand was granted when William Allan Cameron, aged 36, appeared before Mr. E. L. Walton. S.M., in the Gisborne Magistrate’s Court to-day on a charge of assaulting an elderly man, Rino Moiser, on November 5. In asking for the remand, Senior-Sergeant H. H. Russell stated that Moiser was still in hospital and was in no -fit condition to make an appearance in court. On the application of Mr. K. A. Woodward. who appeared for the accused, bail was renewed. A Hat for Mr. Webb, The frequent statement by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, that he would take off his hat to miners and waterside workers was the subject of an amusing incident when the Minister arrived at the annual conference of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation at Wairakei. He was presented with a miniature felt hat by the president, Mr. C. V. Smith, who remarked that he hoped. Mr. Webb would shortly be taking it off to manufacturers and that when he did so he would use a New Zealand-made product. The Minister promptly raised his small hat in mock deference. The Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D.„ G. Sullivan, received a similar presentation. Soldier M.P. Honoured An impressive ceremony took place at the Tokomqru Bay Public School on Monday, when the children were gathered to pay tribute to the memory of the late Lieutenant A. G. Hultquist, M.P. The school commissioner, Mr. J. B. Stafford, who was introduced to the children by the headmaster, Mr. O. Sundberg, referred to Lieutenant Hultquist’s service to his" country both as a member of Parliament and a soldier. Tokomaru Bay children had good cause to remember his efforts, for a new school had been established to get the pupils away from the old flood area. At the conclusion of the address all stood with bowed heads out of respect for the memory of Lieutenant Hultquist. Wairoa Nursing Division

Combined with the annual social of the Wairoa Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, the Nursing Division celebrated its first birthday on Monday evening with the cutting of a cake bearing one candle, by Dr. E. B. Jardine and the Mayoress, Mrs. H. L. Harker. The divisional superintendent, Mr. E. Thompson, presided and, during the evening presented Dr. Jardine, divisional surgeon, with a case of pipes and Mrs/ Hislop with a cup, saucer and plate. Presentations also are to be made to Sister Mallon and Dr. C. M. Debden-Wilkins, who were unable to be present. Mr. W. Bell was the M.C., and items were given by Mesdames P. Morgan, E. R. Baker, C. McCorkindale and Messrs. E. R. Baker and R. Bauld jun.—Special.
