“PIN-PRICKING!”

COMPLAINT TO BOARD TRUCKS ON WHARVES “This matter does not require much discussion, but I thought that it should bo placed before members to demonstrate the sort of pin-pricking wc are subjected to," said the chairman of the Gisborne Harbour Board, Mr. A. J. Nicol, when the board dealt yesterday with correspondence initiated by the Waterside Workers’ Union on the condition of the board’s cargo-trucks at the Kaiti wharves. The board received from the shipping companies’ committee a letter enclosing a complaint from the union, which stated that the wharf trucks were in a bad state of repair, and asked that the board’s attention be drawn to this fact. The shipping committee asked that the matter receive attention. The chairman stated that the wharfinger had been instructed to report, and on receiving instructions had said that no indication of dissatisfaction with the state of the trucks had been received by him, Moreover, all the trucks had been overhauled two or three weeks prior to the complaint. A subsequent report from the wharfinger showed that when the secretary of the union had been invited to indicate the subject of the complaint, he had been able to find only one truck not in order, this being a truck with a cracked handle. The board agreed with the chairman that the correct procedure in respect of damage to trucks was that the wharfinger should be informed, so that repairs could be made without delay and without the necessity of recourse to authorities outside the board.
