CARS ON RAILWAYS
CONCESSION OFFERED RETURN TRIP FREE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Minister of Railways, the Hon. R. Semple, announced yesterday that as a measure to compensate motorists in some degree for the present-day limitations on car travel it had been decided, subject to certain lenient conditions, to grant free return transport of motor cars which are conveyed by rail at ordinary freight rates on the outward journey. The new regulation wit! operate nr. from Monday, December 1. To obtain the concession it is necessary for two adults, or ‘lie equivalent in passenger fares, to hold rail tickets for the same journeys as are made by die car The period wiiiiin which the concession applies has been fixed at three months from the commencement ol the outward journey. This will amply cover the required travelling time of the great majority of motorists. It will not be obligatory to return a car from the identical station to which it was originally railed, but where rerailing takes place at another station whose distance to the starting point exceeds that of the outward journey an appropriate charge for the extra mileage will lie made. The formalities have been reduced to the minimum, added Mr. Semple. Written application for the concession would need to be made beforehand at the station-from which the car was to be forwarded and the completion of a brief certificate embodying the details of the car would be required.
