FARMER DROWNED

LEAKING DINGHY SINKS COMPANION'S ESCAPE (Per Press Association.) TAURANGA., this day. A married man. Mr. Thomas James Cummins, aged 43, a farmer, Apata, was drowned in the Wainuj- River yesterday In the vicinity of the Pahoia settlement) 15 miles from Tauranga. Accompanied by Mr. J. C. Dougal, he rowed from the shore in a dinghy to a launch anchored in the river. They had gone some distance when they noticed the dinghy was leaking badly, and it was evident they would not reach the launch. Mr. Dougal decided to swim ashore to secure help. Mr. Cummins, who was a nonswimmer, stayed with the boat. After a hard struggle Mr. Dougal reached the bank in an exhausted condition and then saw his companion had disappeared. Assistance was secured at an adjacent farmhouse. Constable O’Neill, Katikati, was called. Dragging operations were carried out all afternoon. The body was recovered at 5.30. He leaves a wife and four children.
