Function at Soldiers’ Service Club

As a finale to the first annual meeting of the Soldiers’ Service Club, held in the club on Thursday afternoon, the executive committee entertained in a delightful manner all who had given assistance during the past year. The members of the Poverty Bay Gardening Circle were responsible for the artistic decorative scheme, which was carried out with mixed flowers in soft shades of pink, mauve and blue, intermingled with wonderfully-tinted foliage. On behalf of the committee, a lovely bouquet of mixed blooms in the national colours was handed to Mrs. W. Clark by Mrs. T. Adair, wife of the president, to the accompaniment of musical honours.

Several charmingly-rendered concerted numbers, “Sweet and Low," “Spring, the Piper,” “Dear One the World is Waiting,” “Land of Hope and Glory,” and “The Bells of St. Mary’s,” were presented by members of the Gisborne Choral Circle. The soloists were Mrs. H. C. Nolan and Mrs. Lowe, and the choir included Mesdames 11. Gilmer, R. C. Tuke, L. Balfour, H. L. Primrose, B. C. Jeffreys, P. W. Willock, Simpson, A. P. Dickson, H. D. Chrisp, J. O. Musgrave and W. C. Kohn. The accompaniments were played with sympathetic understanding by Mrs. G. F. Barnwell.

Mrs. W. Clark performed the ceremony of cutting the unique and much admired birthday cake, which was made in the form of a V for Victory. The cake was surmounted with the inscription, “Lest We Forget,” together with tiny flags and guarded by a miniature replica of a soldier in battle dress, units of the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, and "field guns. A miniature Union Jack and the New Zealand nag, which were flown on Armistice Day, 1918, flanked the cake. A delicious afternoon tea was served, members of the Women’s War Auxiliary Corps waiting on the guests.

At the close of the function Mr. T. Todd happily voiced the spirit of the occasion as an expression of appreciation of the services of the members of Ihe fighting forces.
