NATIONAL CANDIDATE

BAY OF PLENTY SEAT MR. SULLIVAN AGAIN THE ONLY NOMINEE Mr. W.. Sullivan, Whakatane, was the only nominee when nominations closed last night Cor the National Party candidate in the Bay of Plenty by-election made necessary by the death overseas of Lieut. A. G. Hultquist. He therefore becomes the official candidate.

Mr. Sullivan, who is 49, was beaten by 169 votes by Lieut. Hultquist in the 1938 general election.

Mr. Sullivan is a New Zealander, having been born in Taranaki 49 years ago. After leaving school he spent a few years of a farm, and then entered the building trade. He went to Whakatane in 1913, and established the

building, contracting and timber business which is now carried on under the name Boon, Sullivan, Luke, Limited.

During his residence in Whakatane he has taken part in local sporting activities and in local body work. He was chairman of the Whakatane Harbour Board for three years. He occupied the mayoral chair in Whakatane borough for 13 years, and the progress which the borough made during that period was, to a large extent, due to Mr. Sullivan’s tact, efficiency and able administration. He has also been president of the Bay of Plenty Winter Show Association since that association was incorporated and he has served on the executive of the Whakatane A. and P. Society.
