LOWER PIG OUTPUT

COPRA SUPPLIES SHORT

“The change-over to cheese and the shortage of farm labour has resulted in a drop in pig production in the Waikato by at least 10 per cent,” said Mr. C. P. Harington. supervisor of the Waikato District Pig Council, in his report to the quarterly meeting of the council.

Where there was a shortage of farm labour, said Mr. Harington, pigs were always the first to be neglected if not cleared out allogeglher. "At present there appears to be no immediate remedy for the decrease in production, but tlie problem is a national one rather than a district or provincial matter."

The position with regard to copra was .still obscure, said Mr. Harington, and it. was felt that a definite statement regarding next year's supply should be made at an early date.

A resolution was passed stating that as copra had proved itself to be the most valuable pig food so far used by the farmers, and in view of the farmers having been asked to produce 11,000 more tons of bacon, and as a result of the short supply available of skim-milk and whey, due to the unfavourable dairy season, it_ was deplored that there were not ample and. regular importations of copra for pig food.
