Biggar, Cameron road; Miss Joyce Ashdowm and her brother, Mr. H. J. Ashdown, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Martin. Palmerston road, are returning to Te Horo at the end of the week. League of Mothers

Iceland poppies, sweet peas and heuchera were artistically arranged at Le Grande Lounge on Monday afternoon, when the monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of the League of Mothers was held. Mrs. E. A. Muis presided over a large attendance of members. A Scripture-reading was contributed by Mrs. H. D. Humphrey. A number of gifts were received to be made up into parcels for dispatch to the relatives of members serving, with the overseas fighting forces. It was announced that the next meeting of the league would take place in March, 1942, and as a "happy thought” for the recess Mrs. Muis read a charming little poem entitled "Just Be Glad.” An interesting competition arranged by Mrs. F. R. Hill was won by Mrs. 0. R. Olsen. Mrs. O. R. Olsen and Miss D. Olsen were heard in two vocal duets, "Greeting” and "A Piper.” and a oneact comedy was excellently produced under the direction of Mrs. Muis. the cast including Mesdames R. A. Wallace. L. F. Sarten, N. Hooper, .T. Hankey, J. Cranswick, and Coles. A vote of thanks was passed to all who had contributed to the programme of entertainment. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed with a prayer for peace.

Engagement

Ashdown-Martin.—The engagement is announced of Henry James, only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Ashdown, of Te Horo, to Margaret Thcresc, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs.. J. J. Martin, Gisborne.

Party for Airman

Congratulations were extended to Aircraftman Ronald Biggar, Royal New Zealand Air Force, by about 140 guests at the very jolly dance given by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Biggar, at their home in Cameron road on Monday night, in celebration of his coming-of-age. Flags and gay streamers canopied the spacious sitting-rom. wliiclK was further enhanced with artistic cJecorations of red and cream roses, aind the adjoining verandah was bedecked with coloured lights. Cards were enjoyed by the non-dancers in a room fragrant with pastel-shaded noises. The music was supplied by ’Mr. A Pilkington, and extras were played by Mrs. Esquilant (piano) and Messrs Cook and Wilson (accordions). l .

Supper was served informally, the handsome two-tier birthday cake, made by the hostess, forming an effective centrepiece on the table. The loyal toast was proposed by the host, and the health of the celebrant proposed by Mr. J. Eivers, was accompanied by musical honours. A gold" key was handed by Mrs. Biggar to her son. Mr. R. Morrison also took the opportunity to ask the celebrant to accept a gift carrying his good wishes. Mrs. Biggar was wearning a smart frock of black satin accented with a diamante ornament. Among the guests were Aircraftmen L. Andrews (Whenuapai), R. Cade and N. Riddell (Hobsonville), and Private 0. Meredith (Trentham). Coming’-of-Age Celebrated

On Monday night Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Martin entertained over 40 guests in a very delightful manner at their home in Palmerston road in celebration of the coming-of-age of their daughter Margaret. Gold and blue irises were artistically arranged in the drawing-room and the dining-room was gay with sweet peas, a crystal bowl of pink and mauve watsonia and blue irises being chosen for the decoration of the supper table. Two amusing competitions _ were won by Miss I. Duncan and Miss M. Shone respectively, and community singing was also enjoyed.. After supper, Mr. Martin presented his daughter with a gold key and also took the opportunity to announce her engagement to Mr. H. J. Ashdown, of Te Horo. Good wishes were showered upon the affianced couple, and Mr. Ashdown. on behalf fef Miss Martin and himself, made suitable acknowledgment. The handsome two-tier birthday cake was made and presented by Mrs. ,T. D. Ashdown, Te Horo, mother of celebrant’s fiance. The hostess was wearing a graceful frock of black cloque printed in a floral design in cyclamen and blue tonings. Miss Margaret Martin wore a > smart frock of navy blue sheer braided in white, and a double string of Richelieu pearls, the birthday gift of her parents.
