Two brothers who appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this mornjng admitted Having bought petrol With coupons recovered from a cargo of scrap paper at, Lyttelton on May ( 2G. They were Edgar and,Harold Backhouse, who pleaded guilty to buying a quantity of petrol in a manner unauthorised under the oil fuel emergency regulations. Each rrian Was fined £2 10s and costs by Mr. McLachlan, S.M. Harold Backhouse formerly worked as a wharf labourer, said DetectiveSergeant McClung. He was employed on unloading a consignment of scrap paper from a ship at Lyttelton. One of the packages burst and some petrol coupons fell out. Backhouse latev used some of the coupons to buy 12 gallons of.petrol and gave the others to his brother, Edgar. Other coupons were given away and still more were destroyed. The coupons which had been given away were recovered. There was no suggestion that the two accused were the only men concerned in the theft of coupons and both riien had been very frank.
