TAKING NO RISKS
A.R.P. IN AUSTRALIA GRANTS FOR EXPENDITURE (Reed. Nov. 20, 9 a.m.) CANBERRA, Nov. 19. The Australian Prime Minister, Mr. J. Curtin, to-day revealed himself at variance with the commander of the Australian forces in the Middle East, Lieut.-General Sir Thomas Blarney, on the air raid precautions policy and bomb risks in Australia. Mr. Curtin said: “I cannot share the ‘illusion’ that what happened in other countries cannot happen here.” He announced that the Commonwealth intended to take no risks and would this week allocate £15,000 to all States for air raid precautions This constituted the second instalment of the £500,000 promised by the last Government.
Lieut.-General Sir Thomas Blarney, commander of the A.I.F. overseas, was reported to have said that he thought that the extraordinarily large sums being spent on air raid precautions in Australian cities were out of proportion to the risk involved. Australian cities could only be attacked by sea-borne aircraft, whose numbers would be limited by circumstances, he said. Aircraft-carriers themselves would be highly vulnerable targets as had been proved on several occasions.
