MAN-POWER APPEALS

Y.M.C.A. SECRETARY •* SERVICE DEFERRED FARM ADJOURNMENTS Among the appeals which came before the Gisborne District ManPower Committee, Messrs. F. R. Ball, chairman, J. E. Benson and A. T. Webber, to-day, was one by the Y.M.C.A. on behalf of the secretary Patrick Buddie, who was granted a sine die adjournment last May against Territorial service. His appeal on this occasion was dismissed on condition that the reservist was not to be called before February 28 and that he should not be liable for home defence service.

Supporting the appeal, the president of the Y.M.C.A, in Gisborne, Mr. F. T. Robinson, stated that he could add nothing to what was said on the previous occasion, when it was pointed out that if Buddie had to go the local activities would have to cease, because of the difficulty in securing a replacement. In reply to a question, Mr. Robinson said that the board of directors had not considered a temporary appointment while the reservist did three months’ training with the Territorials. Volunteer for Overseas Service A review was made of Mr. H. McDiarmid’s appeal on behalf of his son, A. H. McDiarmid, farm hand, a volunteer for overseas service and for whom a sine die adjournment was granted in May. Mr. A. A. Whitehead, on behalf of the father, said that since the last hearing Mr. McDiarmid had transferred his property to the reservist and another son, because of failing health. If total exemption could not be granted, he asked that his service be delayed until the end of the milking season. The reservist said he was a member of the Home Guard at Patutahi, and his father was 72 years of age. A sine die adjournment was granted. Contracts to be Fulfilled J. J. W. Fletcher, a fencer, asked for a delay of three months for the purpose of fulfilling incomplete contracts before entering durational service in New Zealand with the 10th Heavy Regiment. This was granted. An appeal by T. R. Osgood against duration service with the 10th Heavy Regiment was dismissed, providing the reservist should not be called before February 28. On behalf of the reservist Mr. L. T. Burnard said that the appellant was the owner of a bottle exchange. He was married and had his mother to keep. In the present state of the reservist’s business and domestic affairs it would be a hardship if he had to go into training.
