prices were pushed tc record heights on the Wellington market on Thursday. A shortage of produce and a corresponding rise in prices has been developing over the last fortnight, and on Thursday the eagerness of buyers to gain possession of what produce was offering created an atmosphere on the floors of the Allen street and Blair street buildings like that at a wool sale. “Cabbages are expensive, please do not pull . about,” reads a sign displayed in an Auckland greengrocer’s shop. Cabbages are not the only vegetable which is expensive, and Auckland " housewives need no reminding of the record level tc which prices have soared, in some cases far beyond the purse of the average wage-earner.
