MONTH’S EXTENSION

PARCELS FOR BRITAIN PERMISSIBLE WEIGHTS The postal authorities in Gisborne to-day advised that a month’s extension has been made in respect of the arrangement to accept parcels up to 51b. of foodstuffs for dispatch to civilians in Britain. The post office will accept such parcels, containing cakes and puddings, up to November 30. The maximum of other foodstuffs, such as butter, honey, cheese, fruit, and sugar, is still 21b.

A desire to facilitate the dispatch of gift eakes and puddings prompted an arrangement .between the New Zealand and Home postal authorities. It was recognised that the restriction of 21b. of any one kind of foodstuff would seriously affect the convenience of those who wished to send prepared foods, for the Christmas season in particular, and also that cakes and puddings probably would contain no more than 2lb. of any one ingredient, even though the total packed weight reached the maximum of 51b.

Bakers throughout New Zealand have enjoyed a substantial patronage from people who wished to send food gifts to civilians in Britain, and who were not themselves expert enough to prepare parcels. Gisborne firms equipped to undertake this type of business are receiving a full share of orders, and have received reports from abroard indicating that their cakes and puddings, delivered to order, have arrived in first-class condition.
