SUPPLY OF COSMETICS

AUSTRALIAN TRADE SYDNEY, Sept. 10. What might be called cosmetic autarchy is on the verge of being established in Australia. Within a Hew months, experts say, all, face powders, creams, lipsticks, lotions and similiar products well be made in Australia. About the only exception will be genuine French perfume. Australia still has about a year’s supply. After that no one can tell. There has been a transformation of the Australian cosmetic trade over the last two years. Supplies from France and America have been cut off for [some time, and Australian manufacturers have had to step into the breach. Two years ago, huge quantities of cosmetics were imported. Local manufacturers did not bother much with the better quality creams, lipsticks and powders customarily brought from overseas. However when imports were /irst curtailed and later dried up. local manufacturers got busy. Standards were raised, new lines of manufacture were begun, and renowned cosmetic products made in Australia according to the formulae used abroad. To-day these manufacturers can supply almost everything from the finest quality down. Until 'a few months ago there was one line left which still had to be made in Australia —high quality compacts. Now these are being made. There is only one secondary problem still unsolved. Australia’s glass industry has no time to develop the manufacture of fancy bottles, used overseas for perfumes and other liquids products. Cosmetic manufacturers have to take what is available.
