GERMAN PRESSURE BATTLE THE CRIMEAN FRONT MAJOR OFFENSIVES (E!ee. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Oct. 31, 3 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 30. With fighting flaring up around Leningrad and also at some points in the more northern sectors, the pressure against the Russian armies on all fronts is perhaps more widespread now than at any time since Hitler's announcement of the new gigantic operations on October 3. The Stockholm correspondent of The Times emphasises that the activities against Moscow and the Crimea have been developed in the past few days into major Axis offensives while the efforts against Rostov and the Donetz basin continue unabatedly. While the Germans keep the Russians engaged scarely less heavily than before in the Kalinin and Volokalamsk regions and adopt defensive instead of offensive tactics around Mojaisk and Maloyaroslavets, they are developing the assault with intense fury against the opposite wing of Moscow s defences, where they are thrusting on a large scale in the direction of Tula despite tough resistance and heavy casualties. The Russians admit that this new German offensive is progressing and positions :.in the Tula sector are seriously threatened.
