Mr. J. H. May, Hastings, well known amongst Dominion bandsmen as a successful hymn composer, is the guest of his niece, Mrs. W. Sinton, Macdonald .street, Gisborne. Mr. H. Hunter, who is representing the Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Police Association at the annual conference in Wellington, is expected to return to Gisborne during the week-end.
Mr. J. A. McCash, chief clerk at the Wairoa railway station, will leave on Monday for Trentham to go into training for overseas service, having been posted to signal reinforcements. —Special.
Along with officers and n.c.o.’s of the First Battalion, Hawke’s Bay Regiment, the Hon. W. E. Barnard, M.P., who holds the rank of second-lieutenant, will enter camp at Palmerston North on November 1 for a special training course which is expected to terminate at Christmas.
Mr. W. G. Brownlie will leave Wairoa to-day for Christchurch to attend a meeting of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs. In addition he will preside at the meeting of the Wellington council of the federation in Palmerston North. — Special.
