Appeals Against Service

' The Christchurch executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association is to be asked to bring forward at the next Dominion conference a remit that “armed forces appeal boards be abolished and no man have the right of private appeal.” The request has been sent forward by the Belfast subbranch of the association, which unanimously agreed to the remit at a smoke concert attended by 80 of its members and representatives of other branches.

“Wings for Winston Campaign” The response to the appeal made by the British Ambassador, Sir Esmond Ovey, to the British community in Argentina and to foreign sympathisers to give a Spitfire to Mr. Churchill as a birthday present—generally known as the “Wings for Winston Campaign”—has far exceeded expectations. In three weeks the sum of 353,160 pesos, equivalent, roughly to £20,800, was collected from 17,000 subscribers, and gifts are still being received. Mr. Churchill will be 67 on November 30.
