QUICK “SHOWDOWN”
NATIVE BLOCK RATES QUESTION OF PAYMENT “As soon as there is a showdown the better,” stated Mr. J. T. Gordon at the meeting of the Cook County Council to-day, when a letter came before the 11 council from the registrar of the Native Land Court stating that as one of the blocks did not show a profit on the year’s workings that block was unable to pay its rates this year, but "f would give consideration to. the pay-* ment of those rates next year. Mr. M. T. B. Hall feared that the Land Board seemed to take the attiiit tude that because it made no profits “ it was not liable for the payment of rates, and that the reference to consideration of payment next year did not mean any attempt to pay the present year’s rates. Z On the motion of the chairman, Mr. '* W. G. Sherratt, it was decided to ex- ■ change views with representatives of the Uawa and Waikohu counties when they met at a proposed hospital conference to be held shortly.
