WATERFRONT FIRE
BROOKLYN BLAZE TERRIFIC EXPLOSION FEARS FOR MANY LIVES (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Aug. 19, 3 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 18. A terrific explosion touched off a raging fire on the Brooklyn waterfront to-day, destroying a 1000 ft. pier used by British ships to load supplies and the Italian ship Panuco, which the Mexican Govern:nent seized. Four men are known to have been killed. It is feared that many more lost their lives in the ship and under the pier. Fifty-five men were in • jured, seven critically. Fire-boats, police launches and coastguard cutters rescued 28 suf vivors from the water. Two longshoremen were drowned when they jumped from the Panuco, which was afire from stem to stern and drifted down the bay. Eventually the vessel was beached. It is feared there are many victims aboard the vessel. Fire-boats, 26 fire brigades, and 300 firemen .fought (the fire, which destroyed much valuable property. Numerous explosions occurred while the fire raged. The authorities have begun a search for evidence of sabotage.
