TANKER TORPEDOED
SWEEPS OVER CHANNEL NAZI PLANES DOWNED (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 2.45 p.m. RUGBY, Aug. 17. An Air Ministry communique states: “This afternoon Coastal Command Bcauforts, escorted by fighters, attacked an enemy tanker in the Channel. A hit was obtained on the stern with a torpedo. Our fighters made many offensive sweeps over the Channel and northern France, in the course of which they destroyed seven enemy fighters. “We lost two fighters and one bomber, but three out of four of the bomber’s crew were saved.”
