VISIT TO EGYPT
SOUTH AFRICAN PREMIER TROOPS IN DESERT (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 2.40 p.m. RUGBY, Aug. 17. The Prime Minister of South Africa, Field-Marshal J. C. Smuts left for Pretoria by air after three days’ visit to the South African troops in Egypt. He made a whirlwind tour of camps in the desert and elsewhere. He later met the British Ambassador, Sir Miles Lampson, Captain Oliver Lyttelton, Minister of State in the Middle East, General Sir Claude Auchinleck, the Commander-in-Chief, Middle East and Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham, Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean. The latter flew specially from a Mediterranean port to see Field-Marshal Smuts. v Addressing the troops in the desert, I Field-Marshal Smuts said he did not think it would, be necessary for South Africans to serve outside Africa where there was sufficient work for them.
