Miss B. M. Ferguson, Wairoa, has bec-n appointed matron of the Matamata Hospital, subject to the approval of the Director-General of Health. Mr. H. Le Bas, physical instructor for the Internal Affairs Department, left to-day for the Coast for the purpose of visiting Tolaga Bay, Ruatoria and Tokomaru Bay. One of the principal objects of his visit is to attend a meeting in Ruatoria to-morrow evening for the purpose of establishing a recreational centre on the Coast. Miss Borys Ball, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Ball. Gisborne, was a member of the Auckland Training College debating team which pn Friday evening defeated a team from Wellington in a contest in Auckland. On Saturday she received advice of her success in the theory section of her L.T.C.L. examination. ' In the latest issue of the New Zealand Gazette, a list of military promotions witli the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force includes that of Lieutenant R. I. Crafts to temporary rank as captain, while second in command of a company. Another notice of district interest indicates that Lieutenant D. B. Patterson, New Zealand Artillery, has been promoted to the rank of captain. Mr. R\ J. (Bob) Patty was met on Saturday by 30 fellow-members of the Kahutia Bowling Club and made the recipient of a fountain pen on the eve of his departure to join the radio section of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. In making the presentation, Mr. George McKessar, president of the club, made eulogistic reference to Mr. Patty as a member of the club, and emphasised the loss to bowls his departure would mean to Gisborne. Several other speakers endorsed the president’s remarks.
