“POLITICAL PLOT”

LABOUR ALLEGATION MR. MENZIES’ LONDON TRIP APPROVAL UNLIKELY (Reed. Aug 16, 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 16. The question whether the Australian Prime Minister, Mr. R. G. Menzies, will bring off his trip to London, is still the subject of controversy ’ in all the newspapers. The three Labour members of the War Council claim that there has been a political plot by the Government to muzzle the Labour Party under the cover of the National Emergency Act. It is alleged that after Mr. Menzies went to Adelaide a week ago, fellow Ministers,, by a pre-arranged plan, dramatised and cooked up the events in order to get Mr. Menzies away and also to induce the Labour Party to 1 consent and give the Government immunity from attack or defeat his absence. Press opinion inclines to the belief that, with the battle now transferred to Canberra to be fought out in the party rooms and Parliament; next week, the odds are heavily against Labour’s acceptance of the proposal, although the leader, Mr. J. Curtin, is expected to fight strenuously for it. Mr. Curtin’s colleagues on the War Council absolve him from any complicity with the alleged plot.
